STENCH from a clogged drain which has become a recurring problem for the past 10 years has riled up students of a school and nearby residents in Bagan Ajam in Butterworth.

SMK St Mark Parent-Teacher Associa-tion (PTA) chairman Khalid Omar said workers from the Seberang Prai Municipal Council would clean up the drain every time there was a complaint from the school.

“But the problem keeps recurring. Can’t something be done to solve the problem once and for all?” he asked.

He said the pong was caused by rotting garbage and food wastes which were thrown into the drain.

Khalid said students were exposed to danger as they had seen snakes and monitor lizards in the water.

A check showed that the drain passes through the school compound and the Royal Malaysian Air Force base before emptying into the sea.

Khalid said representatives of the state Drainage and Irrigation Department inspected the drain recently but they passed the buck back to the council.

PTA committee member Martin John said during downpours, the water would overflow into the school field and disrupt co-curricular activities.

“There seems to be no solution to this problem,” said John.

When contacted, councillor Soon Lip Chee said he would inspect the drain and raise the issue with the council’s Urban Services Department and cleanliness committee.
